Yes, the GMAT is still important for business school admissions—especially if you’re aiming for top-tier MBA programs. Schools like INSEAD, HEC Paris, LBS, and Wharton use the GMAT to assess how prepared you are for the academic challenges in their MBA classrooms. It helps them compare candidates fairly from different countries and backgrounds.

That said, some schools are becoming more flexible. A few now offer GMAT waivers or accept other tests like the GRE. But if you’re applying to highly competitive schools, a strong GMAT score can really help you stand out and even boost your chances for scholarships. So while it’s not always required, it’s definitely still valuable.
