It’s best to start GMAT prep at least 6 to 8 months before application deadlines. If planning to apply by September 2026, starting by August or September 2025 is a good idea. Aiming for a first GMAT Focus Edition attempt by December 2025 or January 2026 gives enough time to try again if needed.
Many students improve their scores by 30–50 points on a second attempt, so having extra time really helps. Those who delay often end up rushing their essays or even miss Round 1 deadlines because the GMAT isn’t done. Schools like Columbia, Wharton, and Booth have early deadlines, so finishing the GMAT early makes the whole application process much smoother.
