The best time to start preparing for the GMAT is  at least 9 to 12 months before your target deadlines. Most top schools have Round 1 deadlines around September to October, so working backward, that means starting your prep between October and January of the previous year gives you enough time to study, practice, and even retake the test if needed.

The GMAT is not something you want to rush. Most students need about 3 to 5 months of focused prep to hit a strong score (typically 700+ for top B-schools). Starting early also gives you breathing room to balance work, prep, and life—without the last-minute stress.

It’s best to start GMAT prep at least 6 to 8 months before application deadlines. If planning to apply by September 2026, starting by August or September 2025 is a good idea. Aiming for a first GMAT Focus Edition attempt by December 2025 or January 2026 gives enough time to try again if needed.

Many students improve their scores by 30–50 points on a second attempt, so having extra time really helps. Those who delay often end up rushing their essays or even miss Round 1 deadlines because the GMAT isn’t done. Schools like Columbia, Wharton, and Booth have early deadlines, so finishing the GMAT early makes the whole application process much smoother.

It's a good idea to start your GMAT prep at least 9–10 months before your application deadlines. Most top business schools have their first round of applications in September or October, so starting your prep between November and January gives you enough time.

The GMAT needs steady practice, especially if you want to score above 700. You’ll need time to learn the basics, practice questions, take mock tests, and improve weak areas. Giving yourself 4 to 5 months for preparation is usually enough, but having a buffer helps if you want to retake the exam.

Also, starting early means less pressure. You can study at your own pace without rushing. And once your GMAT is done, you can fully focus on your essays, resume, and LORs. So yes—start early, stay consistent, and you’ll be in a strong position when application time comes.

Starting GMAT prep about 9 to 12 months before Round 1 deadlines is the safest plan. If planning to apply by September 2026, it’s smart to start studying by June or July 2025. This gives around 5 to 6 months for solid preparation, plus extra time for a retake if needed.

Most candidates aim to complete their GMAT Focus Edition by January or February 2026. Finishing early avoids clashing with essay writing, recommendation letters, and application work during the spring and summer. Top schools like Wharton, Stanford, and Kellogg have Round 1 deadlines starting in early September 2026, so having a final GMAT score ready before application season helps keep the process stress-free.
