IIM Calcutta interviews mostly pick questions from three areas ,  your studies, what&rsquo;s happening in the world, and small case problems.
This year, a commerce student was asked, &ldquo;Explain arbitrage with a recent stock market example&rdquo; and &ldquo;How does GST affect small businesses in India?&rdquo; An engineering candidate got, &ldquo;What is Bernoulli&rsquo;s principle and where can we see it in daily life?&rdquo; So going over your graduation subjects is important, even if you passed out years ago.
They also ask for opinions on big topics like &ldquo;Should India invest more in renewable energy or nuclear energy?&rdquo; or &ldquo;If you were RBI Governor, how would you deal with a falling rupee?&rdquo; Sometimes they give a case, like &ldquo;A company&rsquo;s sales dropped 30% in two years ,  what would you do as the CEO?&rdquo; They just want to see how you think, not a perfect answer.

IIM Calcutta interviews often connect random topics to see how you handle them.
One candidate got, &ldquo;What is the current repo rate?&rdquo; and then immediately, &ldquo;If you were finance minister, what change would you make in the budget?&rdquo; An economics grad was asked, &ldquo;What is elasticity of demand?&rdquo; and then told to explain it using Coke and Pepsi prices in India.
They also throw in state-specific or industry-specific questions. For someone from West Bengal, it was &ldquo;What are the main industries in the state and their challenges?&rdquo; For a tech applicant, &ldquo;If AI replaced most jobs in your field, what should the government do?&rdquo;
Even hobbies aren&rsquo;t safe &mdash; a chess player was asked, &ldquo;What&rsquo;s your favourite opening, and how does it relate to business strategy?&rdquo; That mix of personal and serious questions is very common at IIM C.
