Successful Harvard MBA essays usually have one thing in common—they sound real. One applicant wrote about a failed product launch and how it pushed them to rethink how they lead under pressure. It wasn’t framed as a big win—it was raw and honest, and that made it memorable.

Another example came from someone who reflected on their identity as a first-generation college student. They talked about how it shaped their worldview and why they now mentor others from similar backgrounds. Again, nothing flashy—just a clear story that connected personal experience to values and leadership.

It’s less about the story being “big” and more about the insight behind it.
