GRE can represent a significant challenge in terms of making time to prepare for it. For many others with a good overall profile, an average GRE score can dampen their prospects of securing admission to a reputed university.
Multiple universities offer MS in the USA without GRE scores as part of the graduate studies application or keep it as an optional submission. In the case of optional GRE scores, not submitting the scores is unlikely to have a lessening effect on the application but a good score can contribute but not to a great extent.
