There are many differences between a regular MBA program and an Executive MBA (EMBA) program, and understanding these differences will help you make the decision.

Primarily, an EMBA program is designed to fulfill the learning needs of industry experts. If you are someone who has been part of an industry for 15 – 20 years then you probably have in-depth knowledge of that industry. But, due to the lack of certain technical expertise, you may be unable to achieve growth in your career. An EMBA program is something that will help you fast track this growth and achieve a higher position in your industry.

A regular MBA program also provides similar knowledge. But, it is aimed to provide knowledge to freshers of an industry. So, while an MBA graduate will also be able to achieve managerial roles faster, an EMBA graduate will scale up their career within the industry they already belong to.

It is also important to note that an EMBA program is usually not designed to help candidates switch industries, as opposed to a regular MBA. Many applicants to the top MBA programs want to switch their career trajectory. This is rarely the case with EMBA applicants. They want to move up the corporate ladder in the industry they hold expertise in but lack the technical knowledge to do so. Many EMBA graduates also end up getting better job offers within their existing companies as opposed to switching jobs.

The average age group of an EMBA program is likely to be 30+ years with candidates having more than 15 years of work experience. So, keeping these factors in mind and where you stand professionally, you should choose between an EMBA program and a regular MBA.
