Well, to say the least it is very necessary. IELTS is not just any test; it is used to get into foreign universities. It acts as a language proficiency test which is an absolute necessity in your admission process. You have to have an IELTS or its alternatives to get admission in any Australian universities. There are other ways as well, but I just want to clarify that one way or the other, you have to undergo a language test.

The reason for this is quite simple. Considering you are applying for an English-taught program in Australia. You may be sure of your expertise in the English language, but the university also has to make sure you are not lying. So more than regularity, the need for a language test like IELTS becomes an absolute necessity.

Not just in Australia, applying to any country will ask you for the same. You can choose from IELTS, TOEFL, PTE or some other alternative language test, but you have to take it. Consider it like your undergrad degree. Like you can skip an undergraduate and get into Australia with a diploma instead. But you have to have a similar qualification in order to start applying.

Same as this, you may find some universities in Australia that do not ask for IELTS or TOEFL. But they have their own English assessment program that you will be asked to take. Therefore IELTS or not, you will need to pass a language test barrier if you want to target any Australian university. This is the only other way I mentioned earlier.

If you are looking for universities in Australia, you can check the FREE SCHOOL QUIZ. This tool gives universities names that are based on your current qualifications. This way, your options are sorted out early and you can proceed with other important steps. Let me know if you need anything.
