While some elite institutions favour IELTS, others will accept alternative types of English language evaluation, like the new Duolingo English Test. As a matter of fact, in case you have studied in an English-medium school for a four-year period or more, higher education institutions in Canada will accept you without the proof of IELTS.

I have compiled a list of Canadian universities that accept international students without IELTS:

1. University of Winnipeg

2. University of Saskatchewan

3. Brock University

4. Carleton University

5. University of Regina

6. Concordia University

7. Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador

8. Cambrian College

There are various other colleges which do not require an IELTS Score but it is not necessary that all of them cater to specialization interest or will align with your profile. So you need to make sure that the universities that you are looking for are matching with your profile and offer the course that you are looking for.

If you need help with analysing your profile, you should directly get in touch with Study Abroad Experts here. They will help you in shortlisting the best-suited options for your profile.

Let me know how this goes and if you want any other information from my end.

IELTS, or the International English Language Testing System, is a popular choice for demonstrating English language proficiency for various purposes in Canada, but whether it is mandatory depends on your specific circumstances:

  1. Higher Education: If you are applying to a Canadian university or college, most institutions require proof of English proficiency if English is not your first language. IELTS is one of the preferred tests, but alternatives like the TOEFL or PTE Academic are also commonly accepted. Some schools might also consider previous education conducted in English as sufficient proof of proficiency.
  2. Immigration: For most Canadian immigration pathways, such as the Federal Skilled Worker Program under Express Entry, proof of language proficiency is required. IELTS General Training is one of the tests accepted for this purpose. Another option is the CELPIP test, which is specifically designed for Canadian immigration.
  3. Temporary Residency: If you are applying for a temporary resident visa as a visitor, student, or worker, you generally do not need to take IELTS unless you are applying to a specific program that requires it (e.g., certain professional licenses or college programs).

It's essential to check the specific requirements of the institution or immigration program to determine if IELTS is necessary or if other forms of proof are acceptable. Being well-informed about these requirements can ensure you choose the right test and adequately prepare for your journey to Canada.
