The procedure is not too complex, in general all countries follow a set pattern. You just need to prepare all your records and follow some steps. The main factors you will need to consider are the standard tests and documents. These are not a part of your previous education and the ones that you can control. These are GRE/GMAT, language tests, SOP, LORs, Essays. In many cases universities judge your applications on how you prepare them.

Basically, listing all the important steps covers all parts of study abroad procedure. Pay more attention to specific details to be ensured.

Choose a country, institute and then a program
Prepare your academic transcripts like undergraduate degree, school reports etc.
Keep necessary documents like ID, passport, photos etc.
Give standardized tests (required by the program)
Prepare standard requirements like SOP, LORs and Essays
Apply to the online application
Fill out the application and submit all required documents
Answer all questions and submit the application
Wait for institute’s reply
After selection, start your visa and scholarship process
Standardized tests like GMAT/GRE and a language proficiency test are necessary. GMAT is essential for business programs abroad. Even if your institute does not ask for a GMAT/GRE, submit it anyway. It will boost up your application. A language proficiency test is an absolute requirement. Most abroad courses are taught in English so popular tests are TOEFL, IELTS and PTE.

Do not underestimate your SOP, LORs and Essays. These documents can be a deciding factor in your admission procedure. You can prepare your SOP a month before to get an idea. LORs are to be requested 2-3 months prior to submission of the application from your recommenders. And there is basically no recommended time for Essay preparations. You can start practicing Essays a year or two when you plan for abroad studies.

Remember that some specialized programs require a relevant undergraduate degree. Suppose you are applying for a STEM course, you will be asked to present some specific subjects like mathematics, science etc. And for business programs, you will need work experience. Check all requirements of the program beforehand.
