I scored a 5.0 on the GRE AWA, and what helped me most was sticking to a fixed structure. I always started with a short intro that clearly stated my opinion, followed by two body paragraphs with examples that supported my point. I also added a small paragraph showing the other side of the argument, just to show balance.
I didn&rsquo;t try to use complicated words or write like an academic journal. I focused on explaining my points in a simple, clear way. I practiced using real prompts from the ETS website and timed myself so I&rsquo;d get used to the 30-minute pressure. Reading a few 5.0 and 6.0 essays with comments really helped me understand what the scorers look for. Practicing 10&ndash;12 essays before the test made a big difference.

I aimed for around 500&ndash;600 words across five paragraphs: an intro, two main examples, a short counterpoint, and a conclusion.
