A minimum IELTS band score of 6 is required to gain admission to Canadian universities. International students must obtain a minimum of 5.5 IELTS scores in each of the IELTS bands in order to apply for a Canadian study permit or visa. The minimum score requirement for various undergraduate and postgraduate programmes at Canadian universities will differ. After the age of 12, the minimum band requirement for students is 5.5 in each of the four sections: writing, reading, speaking and listening. The IELTS exam has separate bands for each of the four sections, and that band is important for judging ability in each section. For the undergraduate courses, the total score would be around 6.0. International students will have higher scores and band requirements for post-graduate courses. Students must achieve a minimum of 6 in all four IELTS sections, with a total score of more than 6.5. This is the required minimum eligibility and IELTS band for a student visa. The band score requirements listed below will assist international students in meeting the Canada student visa IELTS band requirements for 2021. Students must also ensure that all other requirements, in addition to the IELTS band score, are met. If you have any further questions just ask me.

With an overall IELTS score of 6, you're on the right track for studying in Canada, but the scores of 5 in Reading and 5.5 in Writing may limit your options. Most Canadian universities and colleges require a minimum of 6.0 in each IELTS component for direct admission to their programs. However, each institution has its own admissions criteria, and some might accept lower scores for specific programs, especially if other aspects of your application are strong.

Alternatively, you might explore foundation or pathway programs, which are designed to help international students strengthen their academic and English skills before progressing to degree studies. These programs often have lower language requirements and provide the necessary support to help you succeed in a Canadian academic environment.

In both scenarios, I recommend contacting the admissions departments of the institutions you're interested in to discuss your specific situation. They can provide guidance on whether your current scores meet their requirements or if additional steps, such as retaking the IELTS, might be necessary.
