The admission rate for the class of 2025 at MIT is 6.7%, which places it on par with many Ivy League institutions. MIT is particularly well-known for its elite engineering and computer science STEM programs. Still, it also offers courses in other topics, including humanities ones like creative writing.

You'll have to compete fiercely if you want to enrol at MIT.

One of the biggest misconceptions about admissions is that all 20,000+ MIT applicants are compared. Instead, universities seek a general population of students with various skill sets.

Your application's major objective is to demonstrate unity with MIT's culture of rigorous academic inquiry and theoretical underpinnings. It's not simply about like STEM; this is a common misperception about MIT. However, those who study fields like English and history at MIT approach the subject with a theoretically-inquiring mindset.

The tinkerer or researcher is another prevalent archetype; this person explores tasks independently and demonstrates initiative. If this applies to you, your essays and extracurricular activities must reflect this.

Although MIT does not specify which high school courses applicants must have taken, it does suggest the following courses:

  • One year of high school physics
  • One year of high school chemistry
  • One year of high school biology
  • Math, through calculus
  • Two years of a foreign language
  • Four years of English
  • Two years of history and social sciences

It would help if you made an effort to enrol in challenging courses. Of course, this will depend on the student in question's interests and profile. Your grades must be excellent, and you should take many AP, IB, and honours classes, as the average GPA for new students is 4.13 on a 4.3 scale.

The SAT or ACT will not be required of first-year applicants to MIT in 2023. However, MIT invites you to submit your results if you've taken the SAT/ACT or intend to so that the university can assess your readiness more correctly. If you cannot offer scores, the institution will still analyse the other academic parts of your application to make the best judgement possible without making any unfavourable assumptions about your scholastic aptitude.

If English is not your first language, you must have a TOEFL score of at least 90.

Students may use the early action or normal decision application processes to apply to MIT. MIT employs a separate application that is unique to the institution rather than the Coalition or Common App. You must fill out parts like your personal information, activities, and extracurriculars, just like with other applications.
