GMAC allows you to take the GMAT up to 5 times within any 12-month period. That includes both the GMAT Focus Edition and the older format. You’ll need to wait at least 16 days before scheduling your next attempt, even if you cancel the score.

Across your lifetime, the total number of attempts is capped at 8 times. This includes all tests you’ve taken—whether you sent the scores or not. Once you reach that limit, you won’t be allowed to register again.

Students often ask whether retaking the test multiple times affects their application. Schools will see all your valid scores, but most of them consider only your highest score, that’s why many candidates choose to retake the test after improving their prep.

The most updated GMAT policies are listed on the official GMAT website. Checking it before planning your test attempts will help you stay within the limits and avoid wasting an attempt.
