The at-home GRE is similar in content and structure to the regular GRE, but there are a few key procedural differences. You will need to meet specific technical requirements to take the at-home GRE, including a compatible computer, a stable internet connection, and a functional webcam and microphone. Once you begin, a live proctor monitors you through your webcam to ensure test integrity. This is somewhat more restrictive and you are limited to where the camera can see; break times are also determined by strict rules.
Another reason is the at-home GRE requires a silent, isolated space where one will not be disturbed in case of any interruption or noise, which may incur warnings or even cancellation of the test. In comparison, in a test center, technical issues are left to the staff, so it is your responsibility to take care of everything at home, which may add unnecessary stress if connectivity or other equipment issues occur during the test.
