One thing that trips people up: trying to sound impressive instead of sounding clear.
- For the goals essay, skip generic lines like “I want to grow as a leader.” Imperial wants to see structure , what do you want to do, where, and how does their MBA help? Mention electives like Design Thinking or modules like Innovation & Strategy if they actually tie into your goals.
- Be honest if you’re switching careers. Just saying “I’m passionate about tech” isn’t enough. Add proof — have you taken online courses, shadowed a product team, or spoken to someone in that role?
- In the “community” or “impact” questions, give examples from your actual past — how you ran onboarding sessions at work, how you mentored juniors, how you organized something that improved team performance. The more tangible, the better.
Don’t over-edit your tone. A clean, confident voice with real examples beats a polished but vague one every time. You don’t need fancy words, just a clear link between who you are and what Imperial can help you do.
