Case-based questions at IIM A interviews often feel casual at first &mdash; and then you realise they&rsquo;re testing your ability to break down a problem on the spot.
Some real ones people have faced: &bull; &ldquo;A state government is losing tourism revenue despite investing heavily in infrastructure. How would you approach this problem?&rdquo; &bull; &ldquo;An e-commerce company sees high website traffic but low sales conversion &mdash; what could be wrong?&rdquo; &bull; &ldquo;Your company&rsquo;s flagship product is losing market share to a cheaper alternative. What are your options?&rdquo; &bull; &ldquo;Given a table of last year&rsquo;s sales for three product lines, decide where to cut marketing spend and why.&rdquo;
To prepare, don&rsquo;t just read casebooks. Pick up headlines from Economic Times or Mint, imagine you&rsquo;re a consultant on the story, and speak your answer aloud. Even 10 minutes of doing this daily can make you faster at structuring thoughts. It&rsquo;s also worth practising follow-ups &mdash; panels often ask &ldquo;What&rsquo;s the risk with that approach?&rdquo; or &ldquo;How would you measure success?&rdquo; right after your first answer.

Yes , IIM Ahmedabad does ask case-based questions in interviews, and they&rsquo;re not always formal &ldquo;case studies&rdquo; like in B-school competitions. They&rsquo;re usually short business or policy scenarios where you&rsquo;re expected to think aloud and structure your response.
For example, a commerce grad was given: &ldquo;A mid-sized FMCG company&rsquo;s sales have dropped 20% in rural markets over the past year. What steps would you take as the marketing head?&rdquo; Another got, &ldquo;You&rsquo;re running a cafe chain in Ahmedabad, and a new competitor opens next door ,how do you respond?&rdquo; There have also been social or ethical ones, like &ldquo;A factory in your city is profitable but is accused of polluting a nearby river ,  what should the management do?&rdquo;
The best prep is to follow a simple structure ,  identify the problem, list possible causes, suggest solutions, and weigh their pros/cons. Practising with short business or current affairs articles helps, especially if you try to answer in 3&ndash;4 clear steps. They care more about how you think than about getting the &lsquo;right&rsquo; strategy.
