Do consulting firms prefer certain MBA programs?

They definitely do. Most consulting firms, especially MBB, have a list of target schools where they invest time and resources — running info sessions, case workshops, and on-campus interviews.

INSEAD is probably the top feeder for consulting in Europe. LBS is strong too, especially for UK roles. HEC Paris, IESE, and SDA Bocconi are also respected, but firms hire in smaller numbers there. They go back to these schools year after year because they know the grads are well-prepared and tend to perform well.

That said, people do make it in from non-targets like RSM or ESMT — but it’s tougher. The alumni network plays a huge role here. If you’re from a lesser-known school, referrals from alumni already at the firm and intense case prep become even more important. Being at a target doesn’t guarantee a job, but it definitely gives you more opportunities to compete.
