It is not about the toughness of the exam, it depends on what strengths and weaknesses do you have.

If you’re stronger in logic and time management, GMAT might feel easier. The questions are shorter, more predictable, and focused on reasoning. Plus, it’s computer-adaptive — which means your score changes based on how you answer each question.

On the other hand, CAT is known for its unpredictability. The verbal section is tougher, the Quant questions are trickier, and the exam doesn’t adapt — so time pressure is real. Also, the scoring is relative, which adds another layer of competition.

The GMAT is accepted worldwide and is ideal if you're applying to international B-schools. CAT is mainly for Indian institutes like IIMs. So, the better question might be: where do you want to study? Your goals should decide which exam to take.

In short — CAT is generally considered tougher due to its competitive nature and unpredictable pattern, but for many, GMAT feels more manageable with a smart prep plan.

Both CAT and GMAT are tough in their own ways, but the better one depends on you and where you want to study. If you're planning for an MBA in India, you’ll most likely take the CAT. If you’re aiming for international B-schools, the GMAT is usually required.

Now in terms of difficulty  CAT is more competitive in India because lakhs of students take it every year for a limited number of top seats. The questions in Quant are also considered harder. GMAT, on the other hand, is more standardized. It has fewer surprises, but it’s adaptive, which means the test adjusts based on how you’re doing.

If you're good at logic and time management, you can handle both. But GMAT might feel more structured, while CAT demands more speed and deeper problem-solving. So instead of just thinking about which is tougher, think about where you want to go and choose the test that fits those goals best.
