Attended my ISB interview at the Hyderabad campus. It was taken by two alumni. The tone was friendly, but they didn&rsquo;t hold back when it came to follow-up questions. Here's what came up.
&bull; They began by asking me to share something about myself beyond what&rsquo;s on the resume&bull; Asked about a volunteering activity I mentioned and what it taught me about leadership&bull; Questioned my low GPA in undergrad and followed up with what changed after that&bull; Challenged my post-MBA goal of product management by asking why not grow internally instead&bull; Threw in a curveball by asking me to pitch myself to a recruiter in under 30 seconds
Being open and reflective made a big difference. They weren&rsquo;t looking for perfect stories,  just clear thinking and honest answers.

The panel at ISB doesn&rsquo;t just nod and move on ,  they&rsquo;ll drill into your answers until they&rsquo;re convinced you&rsquo;ve thought them through. This particular interview ran for about 30 minutes with two alumni as interviewers.
&bull; One candidate with a finance background started with a story about leading a cost-saving initiative. The panel immediately asked for the exact numbers, how savings were calculated, and what alternative strategies were considered. &bull; Career goals were tested with &ldquo;What&rsquo;s your Plan B if consulting doesn&rsquo;t work out?&rdquo; followed by &ldquo;Why should a firm choose you over someone with prior consulting experience?&rdquo; &bull; Industry knowledge came into play &mdash; for a marketing applicant, they asked about the biggest challenge facing Indian FMCG brands post-COVID and how they&rsquo;d tackle it. &bull; Cross-questioning also happened on extracurriculars. When the candidate mentioned an NGO project, they were asked about budget allocation and sustainability.
By the end, it was clear that ISB looks for structured thinking, comfort with numbers, and the ability to back claims with concrete evidence.

ISB MBA interviews often feel conversational, but the panel will push for depth if they sense vague answers. One recent interview lasted about 25 minutes and was led by two alumni.
It began with a &ldquo;walk me through your profile&rdquo; and quickly moved to career goals. In this case, the candidate had 3 years in IT consulting, and when they said they wanted to move into product management, the panel asked which sector, what challenges that industry faces, and how their current role connects to it.
There were also situational questions like, &ldquo;If your project deadline and quality standards are in conflict, what do you prioritise?&rdquo; and a current affairs question on AI in India&rsquo;s economy. Cross-questioning happened on almost every answer, especially if examples lacked measurable impact. They wrapped up by asking how ISB&rsquo;s PGP would help bridge specific skill gaps, so being program-specific in responses is important.

Yes, ISB does cross-question quite a bit, but it feels like a conversation, not an interrogation. The panel was calm and professional.
They started with &ldquo;Walk us through your resume&rdquo; and then moved quickly into my current project. They asked what specific role I played, how I handled disagreements with senior stakeholders, and what success metrics I used. When I mentioned improving process efficiency, they asked how exactly I measured that &mdash; so it's important to be ready with data or specifics.
They also asked why MBA now and what if consulting doesn&rsquo;t work out. That turned into a five-minute discussion around my Plan B. The cross-questioning was polite but persistent, more about testing clarity than catching flaws.
At the end, they asked if I had any questions for them. Having one ready made the wrap-up feel stronger and more balanced.
