i had almost the same stats , around 6.9 gpa from a state uni, 630 gmat focus, and one year in audit last year i wasnt sure if i should even apply because schools expect higher scores, so i felt my chances were slim. i still went ahead with mimessay since i didnt know how to present my profile. they made me rework my essays multiple times, which got tiring, but it pushed me to bring out smaller things i had skipped, like a finance club project and cfa prep. i didnt get into lse, but i did convert essec and smu mfin.

a 630 gmat focus with an average gpa doesnt rule you out, but it does make schools like mit or lse a lot tougher. options like essec, bocconi, smu, or some uk programs are more realistic in that range  what really matters is how you explain your goals and use whatever internships or projects you have done. if you are good at writing and have people to review your essays, you can try on your own. if not, getting a consultant helps so you dont waste another round. either way, scores arent everything, but you need a clear story.

i had a similar profile,  gmat focus in the low 600s and my grades werent great. tried applying solo and didnt get through. next round i used mimessay. they told me clearly that schools like mit or lse were long shots, but helped me focus on tier 2 mfin programs where my chances were better. we worked on showing my internships properly in the essays, and i finally landed an admit in imperial. so yeah, with a consultant it worked out better than applying alone.

top mfin schools wont be  easy with 630 gmat focus and an average gpa but you still have a shot. adcoms care about how you show your interest in finance and what else you bring outside of scores. a consultant can be useful here,  they will usually push you on essays, lors and building a balanced school list. if you feel confident doing that alone, you can try on your own, but if you want to improve chances at midtier  programs, guidance might help.

630 is not great but also not a score that will get you rejected either. you can still get in if the rest of your profile compensates for the low GMAT. a consultant might help you figure things out better but its not something you cant handle on your own.
