One of the major negatives that come with studying abroad is the expense. The tuition fee for studying in universities abroad is quite a lot as compared to the universities in India. Things like accommodation, healthcare, groceries, etc add up to the already enormous expense. So scholarships come as a savior to any study abroad aspirant since they help waive off some of the burdens of expenses.

While you can not get a fully-funded scholarship, you can look for scholarships that cover most part of your expenses. Here I have created a list of the top 5 scholarships and what all they cover

Chevening Scholarship

Funded by the UK government, the scholarship rewards up to £18,000 (INR 18,00,000). The acceptance rate for the Chevening Scholarship is around 3%. As an example in 2019, of the 63000 applicants, only 1800 were awarded the scholarship.

Fulbright Nehru Master’s fellowship

The scholarship covers - a J-1 USA student visa support facility, economic class flight fares (round trip from the student’s hometown to the institution in the USA), 75%tuition fees, accident and sickness coverage as per the U.S. Government guidelines.

The scholarship is awarded to just 4000 international students each year.

Vanier Graduate Scholarships

Funded by the Canadian government, this scholarship grants CAD 50000 which is roughly 30 Lakhs INR. While the number of scholarships granted is 166, they have a pretty competitive review process, making it tough for you to get into that number of 166 selected students.

Commonwealth Scholarship

Apart from the tuition fees, it covers airfare from the home country to the UK and return. The UK government also gives you a living allowance worth GBP 1084 per month. But the catch here is that this scholarship is awarded to ONLY 700 students each year, and the no. of applications is easily 90 Thousand to a Lakh.

Charles Wallace India Trust Scholarship

Only 10 long term grants are awarded each year which cover tuition fees, and will also contribute GBP 600 towards your international travel. But do you see, just 10 grants a year!

As mentioned, the acceptance rate of these scholarships is pretty low and you need to be double sure if your profile matches their requirements. Different countries have different scholarships and not all schools in a country would accept a single scholarship. The point is, that the scholarships accepted would be varying across countries, schools, programs etc.

So factors like your desired country, school, and program, all of it will help you find the right scholarship for you.

Why don’t you share your profile and preferences with me? It will then help me share relevant and appropriate information with you.

To obtain a scholarship to study abroad for Indian students, several key requirements need to be met. Firstly, academic excellence is often a non-negotiable criterion. Scholarships are competitive, and your academic records, including GPAs, standardized test scores (like SAT, ACT, GRE, depending on the study level and country), are critical.

Secondly, demonstrating financial need may be required for some scholarships, particularly those aimed at providing access to underprivileged students. Be prepared to provide detailed financial statements or proof of income.

Another essential component is your personal statement. This essay should articulate your academic and professional goals, how the scholarship helps achieve them, and what makes you a deserving recipient. Tailoring this document to align with the scholarship's mission and values can significantly enhance your application.

Also, extracurricular involvements and leadership qualities are often required. Evidence of initiative, community service, or leadership either in school or your community can be crucial differentiators.

Lastly, letters of recommendation are important. These should ideally come from academic advisors or professionals who know you well and can speak to your qualifications relative to the scholarship's requirements. These endorsements can provide a comprehensive picture of your abilities and fit for the scholarship.

By meeting these criteria and carefully crafting your application materials, you increase your chances of receiving a scholarship that could make studying abroad a reality.
